Imagine how cool it would be if you could you walk into a space where reality is turned upside down, and your reflection stares back at you from the floor. This is the magical experience created by Korean artist Kimsooja at Paris. Given the complete creative freedom, this artist transformed the rotunda of the Bourse-de-Commerce historic building, home to the ‘Pinault-Collection’. This art project is called “To Breathe – A Constellation.” This installation is part of the larger exhibition Le monde comme il va (“The World as It Goes”), running until September 2, 2024.

Kimsooja’s installation is nothing short of amazing. She covered the floor of the rotunda with mirrors, completely changing the way you see Tadao Ando’s architecture. As you step into the space, you see yourself reflected, becoming part of the artwork. This is exactly what Kimsooja aims for – art that invites you to participate and share in the experience. The mirrors do more than just show reflections; they create a conversation between the viewer and the artwork. Kimsooja sees mirrors as a way for our gaze to move back and forth, connecting us with both ourselves and others, diving deep into our inner worlds. She thinks of a mirror as a fabric woven by our own gaze, flowing back and forth. This beautifully captures the essence of her installation, where reflections become part of the story, blurring the lines between the art and the viewer.

As you move through the space, you don’t just see the art – you become the art. This experience makes you think about how your actions affect the world around you. By being connected to it, you reflect on your own reality and how connected you are with others.

But Kimsooja’s creativity doesn’t stop at the rotunda. She’s also handling 24 displays throughout the installation to showcase her vast collection of art installations. These pieces dive into themes like identity, borders, memory, exile, movement, and weaving. Each display adds another layer to the immersive experience, giving you a deeper look into her artistic journey.
