Art is presented to us in many mediums. Anything or medium can be converted into an art form with the choosing of the artist and the talent.
Andoni Bastarrika, uses sand on the beach as his medium to express his art. He likes to connect with the elements of the natural world, so surreal sculptures of animals is something usual that this artist produces. Get ready to witness some of his wondrous sculpting, fresh out of beach sand.

A decade ago, in 2010, Bastarrika went for a walk on a summer day with his two daughters. After sculpturing a beautiful mermaid just out of the sand made him realize that he had a talent for it. Ever since, he kept on sculpturing while he developed his talent over the decade.

He is fascinated by how nature works. The union that all the sand bits have to be held together and to be sculptured into something magnificent. Also, how nature dries up the humidity and takes back the sculpture down, returning the sand back to its general formation on the beach.

The idea of how the sand works; delivers us a big message on how we can unite to create something beautiful rather than laying around to be meaningless.
The reason he sculpts animal figures is that he believes that rather than humans, animals have a free spirit and that’s something that humans can look up to.

The freedom that their spirits have and the true form that they live in, gives people something to self-reflect. The nudity of the animals are forever in their existence. Animals do not try to cover their bodies into clothing to be adaptable, they are not prisoners of a concept that dictates in worrying about their appearance. Animals embrace their true form, with power, freedom and life itself.

He uses natural tools to create his art. Sharpened sticks, feathers, stones and wood. But more than 95% of his art is sea sand. It takes patience and concentration to create this type of art.
Bastarrika takes quite a time to finish an art piece. His small sculptures of dogs and cats take about 2 to 4 hours while the big sculptures can take around 2 days as well.
