It is said that blond people can only be found among Europeans. If so then how are blondes in Melanesia? They have dark skin aside from Africans. Also, they have blonde hair. They had migrated about a thousand years before even the African people came to America as slaves. Firstly in 1832 Jules Dumont d’Urville had used the word Melanesia to denote the Island grouping is different from Polynesia and Micronesia.

About them being blondes there are different theories. Some say that it’s due to the sun and salt whitening, and some say due to a lot of intake of fish while some say that it might be a genetic heritage from breeding with the Americans or Europeans on the Islands.

Sean Myles, a geneticist in Nova Scotia agricultural college, Canada had done a genetic analysis on saliva and hair of 1209 Melanesians on Solomon Island. He had found that the blonde people carry two copies of a mutant gene which is present in 26% of the population of the Island after comparing forty-three blonde Islanders and forty-two brown Islanders. These people have a TYRP1 gene that causes blonde and melanin and is distinct to European people as it’s not in their genes. And is mostly present in children than the grown-ups and it causes their hair to get dark when they grow up.
